The Vision Behind TVS

The idea of establishing an independent regional broadcaster in Sarawak was first discussed in 2017 under the leadership of Sarawak's Chief Minister, Abang Johari Tun Openg. This was prompted by dissatisfaction with the coverage of Sarawak's affairs by mainstream Kuala Lumpur-based broadcasters. Sarawak's government recognized the need for a dedicated media outlet that would prioritize the state's news, culture, and issues, and this led to the creation of TVS.

The Government’s Plans and Setbacks

Initially, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) had planned to launch a television station for Sarawak as part of the government's broader digitalization plan for Malaysian television. This initiative, which aimed to extend television broadcasting to Sabah and Sarawak, was operational from 1975 to 1984 under Televisyen Malaysia Rangkaian Ketiga. However, due to various setbacks, the plan was eventually scrapped in favor of launching TV OKEY, and the vision for Sarawak's own station was passed on to a private entity.

Green Light for TVS

In 2020, Sarawak’s government officially green-lit the creation of a state-run television station. The announcement was made by Sim Kui Hian, the Minister for Local Government and Housing in Sarawak. This milestone paved the way for TVS to begin broadcasting in October 2020. The channel officially launched on October 11, 2020, with a special broadcast to commemorate the birthday of Sarawak’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor).

Strategic Partnerships and Expanding Influence

In October 2020, TVS entered into a partnership with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), with the aim of financing and supporting the production of films and other media content. This collaboration marked a significant step in enhancing Sarawak’s creative industry, as it provided local filmmakers with a platform to showcase their work.

Looking ahead, TVS plans to cooperate with regional TV stations to foster growth in the creative sector of Sarawak. This will further enhance its programming capabilities and strengthen the local entertainment ecosystem.

The refreshed logo is part of a larger strategy to enhance the channel’s visibility and appeal to a broader audience.
